Tar, Teal and other Oscar hopefuls are struggling at the box office | Techno Glob

Meanwhile, other awards season contenders are looking similarly mixed with success. “Triangle of Sadness,” this year’s Palme d’Or winner and fresh off the new (which shared best picture winner “Parasite”) moved to 610 screens but only $549,000. A $900 per screen average isn’t going to inspire confidence for further expansion in the coming weeks. Admittedly, Ruben Ostlund’s recent earnings have earned $7 million worldwide so far, but that’s hardly enough to topple him. Nor is it enough to bring it to the attention of the average moviegoer.

Searchlight Pictures may have some hope as “The Banshees of Inhabitants” grossed $540,000 in just 58 theaters. Whether that buzz can hold for Marjan McDonagh’s follow-up to “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” remains to be seen. We like James Gray’s “Armageddon Time” entering the fold this weekend, earning $72,000 in six theaters. But again, it’s all about the rollout.

Unfortunately, it turns out that Halloween weekend was a very bad place to promote adult-friendly movies like these. One can only hope that the outlook increases as the year draws to a close at the exclusive box office. Otherwise, we can only find a streaming future barrel for these types of movies.
