RIL’s retail arm in the midst of a hiring boom | Techno Glob

Reliance Retail Ventures Ltd, the group’s retail holding company, is also trying to fill 60,000 junior to mid-level positions over the next three quarters, many of them at its outlets.

The hiring plans come at a time when the retail business has linked up with several global brands, opened new outlets and plans to open many more in the coming months.

“The Reliance Industries retail business has massive expansion plans, which include hiring 150-200 senior executives who will be given VP positions and above. They are recruited from competition and global chains “said the head of an executive search firm, who did not wish to be named.

Reliance Retail Ventures has completed several combinations over the past few months. They include the Reliance Retail Ltd unit which signed a long-term franchise agreement with US clothing company Gap Inc in July.

A month earlier, another unit, Reliance Brands Ltd, announced a strategic partnership with global fresh food and organic coffee chain Pret A Manger.

Reliance Retail operates online and offline stores including Reliance Smart, Reliance Trends, Reliance Digital, and JioMart.

Reliance Brands’ current portfolio of brand partnerships includes Armani Exchange, Jimmy Choo, Kate Spade New York and Manish Malhotra, among several other high-end brands.

Earlier this year, Reliance Retail acquired women’s footwear brand Catwalk and franchise rights in India for Sunglass Hut.

These plans come into effect as the conglomerate led by President Mukesh Ambani embarks on a mode of succession planning.

In June, his son Akash Ambani took over the reins of telecommunications company Reliance Jio. His daughter Isha Ambani is expected to take over the retail branch.

“The company is also considering various stock option plans to attract senior talent, but no structure has been finalized,” added the head of the recruiting firm.

Consultancy Bain is working with the retailer’s management team, but Reliance Retail Ventures Ltd and Bain did not respond to Mint’s questions.

A junior to mid-level recruiter hired by Reliance said the company boosted hiring at store level, especially in northern India, from the June quarter. Reliance Retail opened 720 stores during the quarter, bringing the total number to 15,916.

According to its latest earnings announcement, Reliance Retail added more than 17,000 jobs during the quarter for a total of 379,000.

“Currently, the hiring they do is at the acting or staffing level. Thus, the bulk was hired from northern India, with pockets from Madhya Pradesh. But significant hiring has taken place around Delhi, Chandigarh, Rajasthan – in those belts,” he said on condition of anonymity.

The recruiter said the retail industry expects to see similar hiring dynamics in the coming months in other regions.

“Hiring began taking into account the end of year celebrations when contracts are signed with temporary workers for at least six months. Apart from this, new store openings are another reason why the numbers have increased. They are now only looking for experienced hires and only newbies in certain scenarios,” he added. Each store requires 30-35 people in different roles.

Salaries for new hires at junior levels will start from 25,000- 30,000 per month.

“They’re looking at very aggressive (hiring) numbers, and that’s why they’re bringing in big players like us, so they can hire in all regions simultaneously,” he added.

Meanwhile, electronics chain Reliance Digital is expected to add 40 stores over the next two months. The chain has already opened 26 stores since April, a senior chain executive said.

The rebranding of former Big Bazaar stores to “Smart Bazaar” by Reliance Retail has begun, and hundreds of those stores will welcome shoppers across the country in the coming weeks, the person said, requesting anonymity.
