Reliance Jio to Unveil Low-Cost Laptop at Just ₹15,000: Report | Techno Glob

Reliance Jio will soon launch a laptop at only 15,000. The low-cost laptop is the result of the telecommunications giant’s efforts to replicate its successful Jio Phone in India, sources told Reuters news agency.

In 2016, Reliance Jio shook up the telecom industry with its jaw-dropping price offers for Jio, including 4G data plans and voice service. Last year, Reliance Jio unveiled the JioPhone which costs $81 ( 6,623).

According to the report, the laptop will be called JioBook and will be integrated with a 4G SIM card. It will be available for customers like schools and government institutes starting this month. A general public launch is planned within the next three months.

The JioBook will be produced locally by subcontractor Flex. Reliance Jio had raised around $22 billion from global investors such as KKR & Co Inc and Silver Lake in 2020, according to the Reuters report.

A company source, while requesting anonymity, told Reuters that the JioBook would be as big as the JioPhone. Reliance Jio has over 42 crores of customers. The laptop will run on JioOS operating system and some of the Microsoft applications will also be available. It will be powered by Qualcomm chips based on technology from Arm Limited.

The biggest challenge for JioBook is to compete with giants like Acer, Lenovo, HP and Dell. Laptops in India mostly run on Microsoft Windows. Adoption challenges will be user awareness, experts say

The laptop will compete with a limited number of offerings in this price range from Acer, Lenovo and Indian company Lava.

But it could face some resistance in a country where laptops running Microsoft Windows dominate.

Reliance Jio has already announced that it will launch standalone 5G services in select metropolitan cities by Diwali. The company now run by Mukesh Ambani’s eldest son, Akash Ambani, said it would roll out 5G services across India by December 2023.

The company is also set to launch the 5G Jiophone which is codenamed “Ganga” and will be priced between 8,000 and 12,000.
