Reliance Jio is ahead of its peers in subscriber additions, May data shows | Techno Glob

Subscriber data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) for the month of May shows that all telecom operators have lost subscribers in the metros. As SIM penetration is high in these markets, this trend indicates SIM consolidation due to tariff hikes, analysts at Jefferies India noted in a July 19 report.

Overall, Reliance Jio led the race by adding 4.5 million active subscribers in May. Bharti Airtel Ltd then added 2.2 million subscribers. But Vodafone Idea lost 2.3 million subscribers. As a result, Vodafone Idea’s active subscriber market share declined by 31 basis points (bps) sequentially to 21.6%, while Jio and Airtel gained market share of 30 bps and 8 bps respectively. One basis point is one hundredth of a percentage point.

The telco’s total active subscriber base added 4 million subscribers sequentially in May after a sharp decline in April.

The same trend was seen in the base numbers of registered subscribers, which rose sequentially by 2.8 million to 1.146 million in May. This is the first instance of notable subscriber growth after the flat growth and decline seen over the past five months. Jio added 3.1 million subscribers followed by Bharti Airtel which added 1 million subscribers consecutively. Vodafone Idea lost 0.8 million subscribers.

However, in terms of mobile broadband subscriber additions, all three major carriers have seen growth. Jio, Airtel and Vodafone Idea added 3.1 million, 1.9 million and 1.2 million subscribers respectively in May.

Adjusted for inactive subscribers, mobile broadband market share for Airtel and Vodafone Idea was 28.7% and 16.7% respectively, while Jio’s market share increased by 11 bps to 51.8%, according to analysts at ICICI Securities. .

“Jio’s active subscriber leadership and Bharti Airtel’s Arpu focus will improve the tariff outlook,” the Jefferies report added. Arpu is the average revenue per user.
