Reliance Jio became the largest landline operator in the country for the first time in August. According to data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), with 7.35 million landline connections as of August 31, Reliance Jio is said to have overtaken state-run telecom operator and earlier market leader BSNL’s 7.13 million connections.

The report also said the total telecom subscriber base in the country grew to 117.5 million in August, with Jio adding more new customers and rural areas growing at a higher rate than urban centers.

The TRAI correspondent was earlier concerned about the dwindling landline connections in the country as the same network is also used to deliver fixed broadband services. The number of landline connections, mainly dominated by BSNL and MTNL, has declined from 36.76 million in 2010 to 20.58 million in 2020.

“The number of telephone subscribers increased from 11,737.7 million at the end of July 2022 to 1,175.1 million at the end of August, with a monthly growth rate of 0.1 percent. According to the report, Sunil Mittal-led Bharti Airtel added 0.3 million subscribers in August. It added 0.5 million and 0.7 million subscribers in July and June, respectively. Third placed Vodafone Idea continued to lose subscribers; 1.9 million in August against 1.5 million in July.
