Reliance Jio added 4.2 million subscribers in June, beating its nearest rival Bharti Airtel by a margin of 5:1. It also dramatically widened the gap between the two telcos – Jio now has 50 million more subscribers than Airtel.

Jio had 413 million subscribers, compared to Airtel’s 363 million at the end of June.

according to the latest data published by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), a struggling telco Vodafone Idea continued to lose subscribers and decreased by 1.8 million during the month.

Overall, Jio added 9 million subscribers in the first three months of FY23, while Airtel managed only 2.6 million. Vodafone Idea lost a little over 4 million subscribers during this period.

However, in the first six months of 2022, Airtel is still ahead of Jio and Vodafone Idea by a wide margin – during this period Airtel added over 7 million subscribers, Jio lost 2.7 million and Vodafone Idea lost almost 9 million.

Total subscribers will increase, but active subscribers will decrease slightly

Overall, the Indian telecom industry witnessed a net addition of more than 2 million subscribers in June, but the active subscriber figure declined slightly.

Vodafone Idea’s losses continued to grow both in terms of active subscribers and total subscribers.

This is a concern for Vodafone Idea, whose active subscriber market has been declining every month since the beginning of 2020 – from January 2020 to June 2022, Vodafone Idea’s active subscriber market fell from 30.1% to 21.5%.

During the same period, Airtel grew from 31.7% to 35.1%, while Jio increased its share from 31.4% to 37.7%.

An interesting indicator is the correlation between Jio’s active subscriber rate increase and its subscriber decline – in August 2021, Jio’s active subscriber rate was 79%, and by June 2022, it had increased to 92.8%.

Jio lost around 31 million subscribers during this period – most of the cuts occurred between September and February.
