Industry tracker Ramesh Bala took to Twitter to share the latest box office figures. He added that the film has done exceptionally well in Kerala, Karnataka and overseas.
At the US box office, the film has become the highest performing Tamil film of all time by grossing $4.13 million in the first four days including the premiere.
The film has been made on a grand scale and has already proved to be the best Tamil opening of 2022 with the worldwide opening of the overall collection. ₹80 crores.
Ponniyin Selvan I tells the story of the early life of Arulmozhivarman (Ponniyin Selvan), who would become the Chola emperor Raja Raja I (947-1014). The sequel of the film will be released next year. It features Jayam Ravi, Vikram, Karthi, Aishwarya Rai, Trisha, Sobhita Dhoolipala and Aishwarya Lakshmi.
The film marked Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s return to Tamil cinema after a decade. Aishwarya has two characters – Nandini and her mute mother Mandakini Devi. Upon its release, both audiences and critics have praised Aishwarya’s performance.
Mani Ratnam recently said in an interview that he is happy that he could make the film in two parts and is releasing it now because the audience is ready to watch the film in multiple parts. In 1994 and 2011, Mani Ratnam tried to make Punyen Selvaan but both times the project was not taken off as planned.
Talking about the long wait to finally make Punyen Selvan as a film among the group, Mani said that he doesn’t need to make major changes in the adaptation to appeal to the sensibilities of today’s audience, especially since Pandemic. then “Some kind of freedom has been long awaited.
