After a long hiatus due to the pandemic, the Bollywood industry is slowly and steadily getting back on track in terms of movie releases. Many films released in 2022 were affected by various factors including cancellation culture and boycott trends. Films like Lal Singh Chadha starring Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan, Jersey starring Shahid Kapoor and Marunal Thakur, and Runway 34 starring Ajay Devgn, Amitabh Bachchan and Rakul Preet Singh all suffered at the box office. Cinema buffs also chose to skip theatrical releases due to the increasing consumption of OTT content. OTT platforms grew massively during the pandemic and kept audiences glued to screens at their convenience. Interestingly, films that failed to attract cinegoers to the theaters were highly appreciated after their release on OTT platforms. We have a list of movies that did not perform well at the box office in 2022 but managed to win hearts after their release on digital platforms:
Lal Singh Chand
Starring Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Mona Singh and Naga Chaitanya, Lal Singh Chaddha was the official remake of Tom Hanks’ Forrest Gump. The film clashed with Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Padnekar’s Raksha Banda. Both the films did bad business at the box office. Despite great reviews, positive word of mouth and strong performances, Aamir’s film failed to impress the audience. Aamir clarified that his film will release on OTT six months after its theatrical release. But the makers surprised everyone as it released on October 5 on Netflix. Since then, social media has been flooded with comments of praise. Many people are surprised by Aamir and Kareena’s performance. They are also surprised by Shah Rukh Khan’s special appearance in the film. “Why didn’t this film work at the box office?” Such questions are being asked by netizens on social media. Well, the sweet movie is finally getting its due!
Shahid Kapoor is back on the big screen with Jersey after his stellar performance in ‘Kabir Singh’. Mrunal Thakur and Pankaj Kapoor also played important roles in the film. It was postponed several times and it played badly. It was an official remake of the Telugu film of the same name. The original film went on to win the National Award for Best Feature Film. Everyone had high expectations from Shahid’s film. But it turned out to be a disappointing affair at the box office. The film was later released on Netflix and the audience appreciated Shahid’s performance.
Ajay Devgan, Amitabh Bachchan and Rakul Preet Singh’s Runway 34 intrigued people with its content. But it still could not attract the audience to the theater. It made headlines after its release on Amazon Prime. Viewers were very impressed with the visuals and the engaging content. Reportedly, it broke records and became one of the most watched movies on the OTT platform.
Rajkumar Rao and Bhumi Padnekar starrer “Bhadhai Do” might have won hearts with its progressive content but it failed to manage to hook the audience. It was only after its OTT premiere, the film was praised on social media. The audience fell in love with the film. Cham Daring, who played Bhumi’s love interest in the film, grabbed a lot of attention. Everyone was seen praising him for his unorthodox debut.
Trust Ayushmann Khurrana and he will never let you down! His film Aneek, directed by Anubh Sinha, was a huge hit on the OTT platform. Again, the film failed at the box office but the OTT release played a major role. After the digital release, there was discussion on social media. It also starred Andrea Kevichusa, who hailed from the Northeast region. He was seen in a powerful role in the film.
