Algiers, Nov 2 (IANS) The 31st session of the Arab League (AL) summit began in the Algerian capital Algiers with regional food security and Palestinian issues at the top of the agenda.

Tunisian President Kais Said, whose country hosted the last AL summit in 2019, handed over the presidency of the summit to his Algerian counterpart Abdelmadjid Tebboune in a symbolic ceremony on Tuesday evening.

In his opening speech, Saeed said the summit’s slogan of “reunification” offered hope for overcoming all the differences that had caused discord in the Arab region, Xinhua news agency reported.

“We hope that the Algiers summit will be a summit of brothers and solutions,” he said, praising Algeria’s efforts to help Palestinian factions achieve reconciliation.

For his part, Tebbou noted that “the committee is being organized in a complex and sensitive regional and international situation, characterized by the rise of tensions and crises, especially in the Arab world”.

He called on the Arab countries to boost their economic cooperation with a view to securing the food security of the region.

“The Palestinian issue is at the heart of our engagement and at the top of our priorities,” the Algerian leader stressed, “calling on the Palestinian people to renew the Arab collective commitment to the Arab peace initiative to guarantee the establishment of their independent state. The 1967 borders apply to East Jerusalem as the capital. “

In his address to the summit, AL Secretary General Ahmed Abol-Git called for the promotion of the work of the Pan-Arab Organization to resolve all armed conflicts in the region.

“I call on Arab leaders to stop the bloodshed that threatens the present and future of the Arab nation,” said Ahmed Abol-Git, referring to the armed conflicts that have erupted in several Arab countries, including Libya, Yemen, Sudan and Syria.

Apart from the leaders of the AL member countries, some guests of honor, including UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, President of the Align Movement and Senegalese President Macky Sall, the current President of the Union of Africa, attended the AL Summit.
